Highlights of Hunger in India

India is emerging as the world centre of hunger and malnutrition, a report by Indian campaign group, the Navdanya Trust, says.
Taking reference of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) case no. 49253/24/39/07-08 of Late Mr. Teras Ram resident of Bhaisa village tehsil Kerakat Jaunpur district (Uttar Pradesh) complain and the report produced by the administration in this respect. In his report SDM, Kerakat wrote Teras Ram was hit by the jeep on the main road to Bhaisa village (Maotela to Thana Gaddi). Teras Ram gets severe injury on his leg and knee. He gets treatment in local (private) hospital but not in primary health centre or a state level hospital. From the statement of late Teras Ram''s wife Dhanersara Devi and son Manoj and village head’s husband Mr. Ramjeet Yadav came to know that Teras Ram was suffering from Tuberculosis. Teras Ram fell sick due to injury and he died on 24 December, 2007 due to sickness but not with starvation. Teras Ram has 25 decimal lands and his house is made of clay. Economic condition becomes worst after death of Teras Ram and he was only earning person in his house. This is true economic condition of Teras Ram was not good but he did not died with hunger.

The Navdanya trust says that there are more than 200 million people - or one-in-four Indians - going without enough to eat.
The prominent environmentalist Vandana Shiva, who runs the trust, said there were now more hungry people in India than in sub-Saharan Africa.
The government has not responded to the report which was released on Thursday.

But it has repeatedly pointed out that huge progress has been made in recent years to improve the country's food security as its population grows by an estimated 18 million people a year.
The government also argues that individual states must take more responsibility to ensure that there is enough food to go around, especially in rural areas afflicted by bad harvests.

The region has the highest levels of child malnutrition in the world, according to the International Food Policy Research Institute.
The report says the current hot spots of hunger and under-nutrition are in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
In May, a Unicef report said half of the world's under-nourished children live in South Asia.
The Washington-based institute released the Global Hunger Index ahead of World Food Day on 16 October.
'Area of great concern'
According to its findings, the 10 countries with the highest levels of hunger are all in Sub-Saharan Africa.
However it says that: "South Asia has higher levels of child under-nutrition than Sub-Saharan Africa, but Sub-Saharan Africa has higher rates of child mortality.
